30/06/10

This month Community Foundation for Calderdale awarded a total of £21,330 in Healthy Halifax: 4Health4Fun4Life grants to three outstanding community projects in Halifax as part of the change for Life movement.

The latest successful groups; Beech Hill Primary School PTA, Calderdale British Muslim Association and Home Start Calderdale have been awarded grants as part of CFFC 4Health4Fun4Life grants programme. The programme was devised to help voluntary and community groups in Mixenden, Ovenden, Town and Park wards of Halifax to get funding for clubs and projects that get their communities moving more and eating healthier.

Home Start Calderdale was awarded over £8,000 to provide training for volunteers on nutrition and health to enable information to be passed on to parents to support their families. A large part of the grant will be used to educate and encourage both children and families on food and nutritional values including cooking sessions with parents to learn new ways to cook healthy foods on a budget teach the benefits of physical activity to improve both physical and mental wellbeing.

Megan Vickery CFFC grants manager said, "Our project supports voluntary and community groups to tap into grants of up to £10,000 for projects that promote physical activity and healthy eating in their community. Successful projects such as Home Start Calderdale show how they contribute to the Healthy Halifax outcomes by increasing knowledge of 5 a day healthy eating and encouraging physical activity in families to make Halifax a healthier and happier place to live."

Beech Hill Primary School PTA received £7,300 to assist in a new project to provide regular open access sport and leisure sessions at the school to people of all ages, gender, race and ability in the Park area during evening and weekends from June to April 2011.

Calderdale British Muslim Association was awarded £5,780 for its project to build awareness around the causes and associated problems of obesity amongst the elderly south Asian community in Park.

Mr Rahoof of CBMA said "We have over twenty people attending our elderly day care provision on a regular basis. Thanks to the grant we will be able to encourage them to get more involved in activities such as gentle arm chair exercises, establish a walking group and give them confidence to use other leisure facilities such as swimming pools and saunas. Some of our members have shown an interest in growing their own vegetables in nearby allotments at Hopwood Lane and we know that gentle gardening is a great way to exercise and the group will be able to eat their own produce."

Could you run a project to encourage people to take more exercise and eat more fruit and vegetables? If so there is still time to submit an application for up to £10,000 for projects to be completed by July 2011.
