Treesponsibility

23/01/08

Each year the Community Foundation for Calderdale takes on a Project of the Year, the chosen projects receive assistance with marketing and PR and support with funding. They also receive a percentage of the proceeds from all of our events held throughout the year.

For 2008 it was decided that to reflect the Foundation's efforts to be 'greener' and more ethical, a project with an environmental theme should be chosen.

After a short listing process, three applicants presented to the Board of Trustee's - Treesponsibility was the selected project as it combines awareness-raising about climate change with an ambitious tree-planting programme; their long term goal is a sustainable local community, living in a healthy and resilient landscape, able to withstand the impacts of a warming world. Since their inception in 1998, they have planted over 100,000 trees with the help of hundreds of volunteers from all walks of life, and new groups and individuals are always welcome to get involved.

Treesponsibility Co-ordinator Penny Eastwood said: - "We are absolutely delighted to be picked as project of the year, and we'd like to use this opportunity to expand our work. That means we are on the look-out for potential new planting sites, and we'd like to invite all Calderdale landowners to consider the creation of new woodlands - full or partial funding may be available. We are also keen to work with more schools, offering our climate workshops, residential holidays, and tree-plantings.
