Katie (not her real name) is a very young mum with two young children aged 22 months and 5 months. Katie herself was brought up in care and had no positive role model for parenting.
Home-Start matched her with a volunteer who works weekly and soon recognised that Katie was living from ready made meals for both herself and her children, that were high in fat and salt content and low in nutrition.
The volunteer encouraged Katie to buy more fresh food, but Katie was not sure how to prepare these foods and also was worried about being able to afford them. The volunteer agreed to go with Katie to the Supermarket with her usual weekly food budget, and together chose fresh meat, vegetables and fruit. They then spent time together preparing the fresh food for the freezer, showing how healthy food can still be convenient but healthy too.
Katie was so proud of her newly developed cooking skills, she phoned her partner at work to tell him what a lovely tea he was coming home to and how she had cooked it all from scratch.
