Legacies
Leaving a legacy to benefit your local community in your will is a gift that goes on giving.
If you would like to make a gift in your will to help your community, please remember the Community Foundation for Calderdale. When you leave a legacy with the Community Foundation for Calderdale you can be confident that your gift will be managed to benefit people in Calderdale - forever.
There are a number of ways in which you can leave a legacy to the Foundation -
- Pecuniary - A gift of a specific sum of money
- Specific - A gift of a specific item - such as property
- Residuary - All or a share of the residue of your estate
- Reversionary - A useful way of providing for a partner or friend for their lifetime, whilst ensuring the underlying asset passes to your chosen charity on their death.
When planning your will it is important to remember that Inheritance Tax is not payable on gifts to charity.
How will the Community Foundation for Calderdale use your legacy? The choice is yours. You may choose to donate your gift in the following ways -
- A general gift - This will generally help to fund our grant-making in Calderdale.
- A named fund - Your gift will be held in a permanent fund (e.g. in your name or family name) and invested wisely so that the interest generated each year will be spent on making grants. e.g. The Gartland Family Trust - established in 1997.
- A restricted named fund - The allocation of grants from the fund will be restricted to the groups or projects (e.g. young people, sports etc) and localities (i.e. Calderdale-wide or a specific area within Calderdale) that you stipulate are to benefit. e.g. Halifax Courier Fund - Restricted to young people, community sports and facilities. You may also give anonymously if you prefer.
Making your Will
We advise you to use a professional adviser such as an accountant or solicitor to draft your will, this guarantees that your wishes will be carried out. If you have already made a will it is easy and inexpensive to add a Codicil naming the charity of your choice and the amount of the gift. If you have decided to remember the Community Foundation for Calderdale with a legacy and would like further information or advice, please contact the Foundation on 01422 438700.
