Dial Wood Carriage Driving for the Disabled

DIAL has this month received a Kirklees Grassroots Grant of £5,000. This grant will enable the group to provide more opportunities for disabled people to carriage drive by putting more trained volunteers in place. The group plan to use some of their grant to fund a volunteer development program over a three year period and help pay expenses.

With the increase in opportunities to drive the club need to make sure that our ponies welfare was second to none in terms of feed, hay, safety wear, rugs and harness. In addition the arena in which the ponies work, needs a new surface so that it is less dusty and deep. As part of the groups increased activities they plan to take a pony out to people in the community and will use part of their funding to purchase a trailer.


Heavy Woollen District Junior Cricket League

The group were awarded £5,000 from Grassroots Grants Kirklees to arrange for sports hall facilities for coaching and training of young people to learn how to play cricket, and improve their playing and their people skills. The fund will also assist the league to be able to take a number of young people on a cricket tour. They will play people of their own age who play at their county level. The project is designed to give the players experience in working together, supporting each other, gaining leadership experience's learning to respect one another throughout the two-week tour.

Huddersfield Older People's Society

Huddersfield Older Peoples Society, a group which provides activities for around 50 elderly people, many of whom are disabled for has received a £4,635 from grassroots Grants Kirklees. This group has been active for nearly 17years, originally principally for Afro-Caribbean elderly it has changed its focus and now actively welcomes elderly people from across the community and now has a large number of White British members.

The group runs 5 days a week with different activities on each day, activities include socialisation, crafts, sewing, games and other means of breaking isolation. The grant will assist the group to pay for volunteers expense, an exercise tutor and materials such as promotional flyers

Lepton Luncheon Club

Lepton Luncheon Club has received a £2,037 from Grassroots Grants Kirklees. The group meets on alternate Tuesdays at Lepton Methodist Church whose premises are at centre of the Lepton community and are used by many groups. The church kitchen is in need of refurbishment and the Church Council has agreed that it should be remodelled to meet new health and safety and hygiene standards and that the existing cupboards which are still usable should be installed in a store room next to the kitchen. The grant will also enable the group to purchase and install a dishwasher which will be used on a regular basis.

Wilton Tenants and Residents Association

Wilton TRA were recently awarded £2,577 from Grassroots Grants Kirklees to fund a gardening project. The gardening project aims to bring young people, older people and people from different backgrounds to foster a sense of community and belonging.
The project will include 4 sessions targeting young people to make hanging baskets facilitated by Wilton TRA Youth Group with support from the Culture & Leisure Gardening Team. The hanging baskets will be donated to vulnerable adults and older people living on the estate.

To enhance the community gardening project the TRA will have a gardening competition where everyone on the estate will be welcome to take part and will encourage entries to apply to the Batley In Bloom competition.


Yorkshire Supreme Majorettes

The troupe has been awarded a Grant of £860 from Grassroots Grants Kirklees to fund cheerleading uniforms and pom poms for new younger members. As a result of the funding the troupe hope to encourage more new members to join and compete in pom pom competitions. It would keep the young people interested in an out of school activity that is encouraging them to make a positive contribution to their community, encourage them to have fun, make new friends have self discipline confidence and stay healthy whilst leading an active lifestyle.
