Recent Successful Projects

Improve the quality of life for the people of Calderdale.

The following groups and organisations have been awarded grants in the last two months...

Calder Valley Our Net

Was awarded £5,000 in October from the Grassroots fund to conduct a Pre-Feasibility Study, establishing the rationale and scope for a Full Feasibility Study into the Business Case for a Community-Owned NGA network

Mill Bank Group

Was awarded £863 in October from the Grassroots Fund in order to comply with new Electrical regulations and a new Code of practice, the groups were required to replace the village Christmas lights. The new lights will be more environmentally friendly and use much less power. They will need little maintenance and will last for at least five years.

New Beginnings Christian Centre

Was awarded £1,871 in October from the Grassroots Fund. The groups noticed there was very little on offer for the local children, so decided to launch a Kids Club, which is affordable for all and is proving very popular and running at full capacity. This grant will allow them to take the children to a theme park, learn about Performing Arts and Healthy Living, and to launch a club during October half term, called 'Champion Challenging Kids Club' which has a sports theme. To finish the year off they are planning a Ten Pin Bowling Party and to present each child with a Christmas Gift.

Northowram Darby & Joan Club

Was awarded £899 in October from the Grassroots Fund, for an annual party. This is an important date because a lot of the members are elderly, and cannot go on trips. They look forward to a short trip to a good restaurant, a good meal and an afternoon's entertainment.

The Friends of Calderdale's Countryside

Was awarded £5,000 in October from the Grassroots Fund and £1,000 from the John Smith's Lionheart Fund.
Thanks to a grant from the Foundation last year, work has been completed on the first section of the walking route at Foster Bridge, Hebden Bridge. Further funding will comprise the erection of a kissing gate and ramp which would allow wheelchair users access to 300m of river bank.

Turning Point Counselling Service

Was awarded £3,500 in October from the Grassroots Fund.
The voluntary counsellors at Turning Point, have either a degree or advanced diploma in person-centred counselling. The grant will fund new advanced training in cognitive behavioural therapy, which will provide the counsellors with new skills and techniques which will benefit many users of the service.

Sowerby Christmas Lights

Awarded £600 in September from the General Fund. In late 2007, several residents of Sowerby Village decided that Sowerby was probably one of the only villages in Calderdale without Christmas lights. £3,700 was raised for a small display. 2008 will see them link to displays throughout the village.

Calderdale Community Coaching Trust

Awarded £8,200 in September from the Halifax Courier Fund and the Kathleen Mary Denham Fund, to work to develop a unique and innovative project which focuses on creating a greater understanding of nutrition and the importance of healthy eating.

Inside Out Kids

Awarded £5,000 in September from the Calderdale Grassroots Fund, to develop a pilot parent and toddler group and to run two forest school parent toddler groups per week on the Eastwood site. The aims of the playgroups will be to build the confidence of parents/carers with young children to use their local woodland as a free and accessible play space.

Cableform Allotments

Awarded £1,816 in September from the Calderdale Grassroots Fund. The group have a well established, fully worked allotment site, with a group of enthusiastic, committed gardeners. The grant will be used to repair and update a site hut for meetings and storage.

Chiraagh

Awarded £5,000 in September from the Calderdale Grassroots Fund, with the aim to engage Asian Muslim males of British birth aged 11-19 who are at an impressionable age and vulnerable to peer pressures. The project will engage the young people in positive, stimulating and challenging activities to re-engage and re-integrate them into social activities that give them self- esteem, worth and value as members of society.

Luddendene Dene CE (VC) JI&N School

Awarded £5,000 in September from the Halifax Courier Fund and the General Fund, to update and extend the outdoor sports activities provision and security, which will enble them to further evolve its use by mainstream schools,Woodbank Special School and community groups and clubs.

Mount Tabor Community Caring Association

Awarded £500 in September from the Calderdale Grassroots Fund to establish an annual Christmas tree at Mount Tabor crossroads. There was an overwhelming "yes" from residents to make this an annual event with lights.

Northern Orchestral Enterprises Ltd

Awarded £5,000 in September from the Gartland Family Trust in order to identify and support young people of secondary school age with a particular musical talent to nurture and mentor them, tailoring their support appropriate to their needs. They have run the Future Heroes programme since 2005, teaming talented young people identified through Secondary Schools in Calderdale, with professional singers, orchestra players and other musicians so they can have quality, in depth, one-to-one tutoring.

Pavilion in the Park

Awarded £5,000 in September from the Calderdale Grassroots fund to run a youth and community facility in the Pavilion in Crow Wood Park. The project will be to provide youth activities for young people two nights a week aged between 5 to 19 years of age.
The facility will offer a warm, safe, secure and welcoming environment for young people run by a combination of volunteers and sessional paid staff.

Pavilion in the Park

Awarded £4,007 in September from the Sport Relief (Calderdale) Fund to run a sports project to engage with young people in the Sowerby Bridge area, aged between 11 and 21 years of age who are currently not involved in any type of youth activity.

Pecket Well College

Awarded £8,936 in September from the General Fund. The college is a day and residential centre set up and run by adults tackling difficulties with the written word and number.

The Word Hoard

Awarded £3,025 in September from the General Fund. 'Taking Place' is a community writing project that will engage local people in Calderdale with issues of place, environment, belonging and community. It will focus on writing, but include the visual arts and music. The project is a partnership between The Word Hoard and Calderdale Libraries.
