Improve the quality of life for the people of Calderdale.

Hebden Bridge Arts Festival

Was awarded £3,261 in March from the Kathleen Mary Denham Fund. The 2009 Hebden Bridge Arts Festival will run from Friday 26 June to Sunday 12 July.
This grant will enable free street entertainment in
Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd centres on the first two Saturdays of the Festival. The street programme will be a mix of local talent such as Hebden Bridge Junior Band and established national and international high quality entertainers. The target audience is people of all ages, who may not normally attend arts events and families, especially those with young children, who may not have experienced entertainment of this kind before.

Ansaar Organisation

Was awarded £5,000 in March, from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme. The grant will be used to support the Annual Unity Funday activities, which for the last six years have attracted over 5000 people and over 1000 children. They incorporate outdoor events which take place at Birkdale High School, Dewsbury.

Dalton Ward Communities Support Group

Was awarded £2,540 in March from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme. The grant is required for the financial stability of the Dalton Ward Communities Support Group over the coming year, so that they can continue to bring the various groups together and have a positive impact on the residents of the ward.
Activities will include the organisation of the Dalton Gala for 2009, sending members on training courses and to deliver twice yearly newsletters to 5000 homes in Dalton.

Friends of Eastborough

Was awarded £900 from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme in March.
The project is to hold an Autumn Mela in the local school. It will involve the community and the school working together. The event will include food, music, Henna and face painting, children's entertainer, D.J and stalls. This project is an opportunity for the whole community young, old, Asian, White to come together.
The project benefits people who live in a disadvantaged area. It will promote the involvement of Asian women in community action and as volunteers. The Mela would allow the women to succeed, have fun and provide a special day for their community.

Golcar Lily Day

Was awarded £3,000 in March from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme.
Golcar Lily Day is a village festival which celebrates the whole Golcar area. From 10.00 am to 4.00 pm the whole place is full of music, food and this year artwork.
There are stalls in the village centre and all churches, museum, library, 'surestart', shops and community centre are freely open to everyone.

Mixenden Crusaders Jazz Band

Was awarded £4, 045 in March from the Calderdale Grassroots Grants programme.
Theyare a marching display Jazz Band who compete throughout the UK. Their aims are to recruit new members, and they need new instruments to make the band bigger and more professional.
The instruments have been used since the band started in 2001, and are dated, and have lost the tuning . Without updated instruments and uniforms, the group would not be able to compete, as they get judged on uniforms and instruments.

Nuffield Hospital Cricket Club

Was awarded £5,000 in March from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme.
The cricket club in recent years has fallen into disrepair, ground maintenance equipment and the pavilion have both been identified by the Cricket league as requiring substantial investment in order to comply with Health and Safety guidelines. This grant will bring together the local communities of Birkby and Fartown, in particular bringing together minority communities and participants from low income, poor education and poor health backgrounds.

Roundhill Dukes Cricket Team

Was awarded £1,040 in March from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme, in order to purchase replacement equipment, so that the team are able to continue playing.
The new equipment will also enable junior players to continue experiencing senior cricket, and also have the experience of mixing with adults of a wide range of ages and experiences of life.
This in turn will hopefully help them to be better citizens.

The Friendly Club

Was awarded £1,000 in March from the Kirklees Grassroots Grants programme.
The project is called Memories, and the group intend to purchase a small CD player; some CD'S, together with choir sheets and song sheets The idea behind it is to encourage members to join together to reminisce, and talk about their family life, their childhood and their early years. They would also like to organise 2 or 3 coach trips to a museum, for Memory Lane Mornings, and during the summer to organise 1 or 2 outings to stately homes within the region.
