This year’s Surviving Winter campaign launched this week, aims to raises funds to support vulnerable older people in Calderdale. The appeal was launched after shocking statistics reveled by our Vital Signs research showed that half of all pensioners in Calderdale are living in fuel poverty.

The campaign asks those over 62 years old who receive a winter fuel  payment that they don’t need, to donate it to be redistributed as payments to those facing fuel poverty and the prospect of living in a cold, unhealthy environment this winter.  The scheme offers a much needed lifeline to people who struggle to heat their homes during the cold winter months each year, putting their health at risk.

The statistics are shocking, 115 vulnerable people in Calderdale died in the winter months, from causes directly attributable to the cold and poor living conditions.  The majority of these deaths were in the over 65s.
